Seeing need and opportunity for an architecture firm specializing in sports facilities, Joe Spear was one of five co-founders of Populous in 1983. From the beginning Joe specialized in baseball parks, and he has made a name for himself in that space since. Of the 17 new Major League Baseball parks that have opened since 1991, Spear has put his mark on 10.

Joe's designs of Jacobs Field and Oriole Park at Camden Yards both earned National AIA Honor Awards. His portfolio also includes professional ballparks for Denver, Detroit, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, San Diego, Washington, DC and Tampa.

In 2004, Joe was named both an Architecture Design Finalist for the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards program and one of Sports Business Journal's 20 Most Influential People in Baseball. In 2006, he was named to Baseball America's 25 Most Influential People in Major League Baseball. In 2006, Joe was selected as a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
